Google Analytics Introduces "AI Assistant" as a Default Channel Group

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) has officially introduced a new default channel group called “AI Assistant”, making it easier for businesses to track traffic coming from AI chatbots like OpenAI ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Anthropic Claude. Previously, traffic from AI platforms was grouped under the generic “Referral” category. Website owners had to manually create custom channel groups using regex patterns to identify AI-generated visits. With this update, GA4 now automatically recognises supported AI assistant referrers and categorises them under the new AI Assistant channel. The update also automatically assigns the following: Medium: AI assistant Channel Group: AI Assistant Campaign Label: ai-assistant This means businesses can now clearly measure how AI platforms are driving website traffic and user engagement without any manual setup. Google says the feature is designed to help marketers understand how generative AI contributes to website discovery and conversions compared to traditional channels like organic search and referrals. However, there are still some limitations. AI traffic without a referrer header — such as visits from copied links, mobile apps, or in-app browsers — may still appear as “Direct” traffic in GA4. For digital marketers, this update is important because AI-driven traffic is growing rapidly. Businesses can now better evaluate how platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini influence customer journeys and conversions.
