OpenAI Introduces OAI-AdsBot for ChatGPT Ads Verification
OpenAI has officially added OAI-AdsBot to its public crawler documentation, introducing a new bot specifically designed for ChatGPT ads. This crawler helps verify ad landing pages and ensures they comply with OpenAI’s advertising policies before ads are shown to users.
OAI-AdsBot joins three existing OpenAI crawlers: OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, and ChatGPT-User, bringing the total documented bots to four. Unlike GPTBot, which collects data for AI model training, OAI-AdsBot is focused only on ad validation and relevance.
According to OpenAI, the bot visits only pages submitted as ad landing pages. It checks whether the content follows OpenAI’s ad policies and may also use landing page information to determine when the ad should appear to ChatGPT users. Its user-agent string is listed as:
Mozilla/5.0 AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) compatible with OAI-AdsBot/1.0
Importantly, OpenAI confirms that data collected by OAI-AdsBot is not used to train generative AI models, keeping it separate from GPTBot’s function. This makes it a dedicated advertising crawler rather than a training or search indexing bot.
However, OpenAI has not yet published a dedicated IP range file for OAI-AdsBot as it has for its other bots. This makes it harder for advertisers and developers to verify genuine bot visits since user-agent strings can be easily spoofed.
This matters especially for advertisers using strict bot protection tools like Cloudflare or Akamai. Blocking OAI-AdsBot may prevent ad validation, which could stop ads from being approved or displayed properly inside ChatGPT.
