Marketers Report Highest Rates of AI “Brain Fry", Study Finds

A recent study featured in Harvard Business Review highlights a growing concern among professionals—mental fatigue caused by heavy use of artificial intelligence tools, often referred to as “AI brain fry". The research, conducted by experts from Boston Consulting Group and the University of California, Riverside, surveyed 1,488 full-time workers across the United States. The study revealed that 14% of employees experienced brain fry, defined as mental exhaustion resulting from excessive interaction with or monitoring of AI systems beyond a person’s cognitive capacity. One major factor contributing to this fatigue was AI oversight. Workers who closely monitored AI tools reported higher mental effort and a 19% increase in information overload. Researchers also identified a productivity threshold. Performance improved when workers used one to three AI tools, but productivity began to decline once more tools were introduced, suggesting a cognitive limit to effective AI adoption. Marketing professionals reported the highest brain fry rate at 25%, followed by HR (19%), operations (17%), and engineering (17%). Interestingly, the workers most affected were high performers and early adopters rather than casual users, showing that increased reliance on AI can come with hidden mental costs. As AI continues to reshape the industry, structured learning is becoming essential for marketers to manage tools efficiently.
